What is a hashtag?

A key part of any businesses social media marketing plan should be hashtags.

What is a hashtag? Hashtags are defined as a word/phrase used on social media to identify a certain topic. Hashtags are mainly used on social media sites such as twitter and Instagram.

If you scroll through twitter you will see that hashtags are used in most tweets- the reason for this? As an example if you were a wedding planner and you posted on twitter with hashtags such as #weddings #bigday #bride, others on social media who are also tweeting about weddings may see your tweet through following the hashtag #weddings. Following a hashtag means, you search for a certain topic you are interested in and everyone who is tweeting about that topic will show in your feed, a great way to communicate with your target audience.

Choosing the right hashtags to use is important, make sure their relevant to your industry and they make sense in your tweet. Also make sure you use the maximum of 2 hashtags otherwise your tweet looks spammy- you want people to communicate with you not block you of their timeline.

Hashtags are also great to use if your business is running an event. Create a hashtag to promote your event and when the event is on get everyone to tweet with your hashtag to create a social media campaign, you may even get your hashtag trending on twitter- sharing your event and business to a wider audience.

As well as following hashtag streams on twitter, there are some great tools for tracking hashtags.
Hashtracking.co.uk is a power tracking tool showing you analytics from a hashtag and tracking both twitter and Instagram hashtags.

If you are going to use hashtags on twitter remember:

  • Use relevant hashtags

  • Track your hashtag using tools

Good luck!
